While most reviews of things that you’ll find on the internet are of the new and fresh, this review is for something old, and one of the first of its kind. The football ramble was founded in 2007, which in the world of podcasts us absolutely ancient. Originally fortnightly The Football Ramble began in presenter Luke Moore’s kitchen. By the start of the 2009/10 season it was a weekly affair and is now a daily show. As an avid listener since that 2009/10 season we at The Practical Gent can strongly recommend this elder statesman of the podcast world.
Moore is joined by regular host Marcus Speller, comedian Jim Campbell, DJ and voice-over (amongst other things) artist Pete Donaldson and more recently joined by Journalists Andy Brassell and Vithushan Ehantharajah. The 6 rotate throughout the week bringing an excellent mix of insight, chaos and common sense.
In a world where chaos reigns and the tribalisation of football has made sensible discourse a rare thing, The Football Ramble is one of the last bastions of erudite thinking and articulate discourse in the football sphere. In a space populated by any Tom, Dick and Harry, The Ramble’s longevity comes with gravitas and wisdom. As other shows have come and gone it has remained ever present and has show that there is space of sensible discussion and outside the box thinking in the football podcast universe.
Largely covering the Premier League and Notable Mad Stuff from around the world the format changes on various days. From the weekly preview show every Friday, an other regular editions on Monday and Wednesday. The week is sprinkled with the Mailbag episode every Saturday answering listeners questions and Ramble Reacts which immediately follow a midweek game, either in Europe or the Premier League.
After 17 years the Football Ramble finally broke its duck and finally won the Football Supporters Association podcast of the year award in December 2024. Finally defeating the Guardian’s Football weekly it was a victory well received within the football community and at long last a reward for years of incredible work.
As an avid listener for a very long time, we strongly recommend The Football Ramble.
