I initially bought this keg as a short dated item, but it have since bought it many times. It has become one of my go to lagers.
Hasseröder finds itself as the eighth best selling lager in Germany, shifting more volume than more household names like Erdinger. Down from its peak sales, Hasseröder nevertheless shifts over one and a half million hectolitres a year. In the UK market that volume would put it as the second biggest selling lager by far.
Starting in 1872 the Hasseröder brewery spent the Cold War on the other side of the iron curtain. It grew significantly more popular post reunification and while still popular in East Germany has grown across the country.
The Upshot
Hasseröder has a distinctive taste, it’s hoppy flavour gives a pleasant aftertaste. It has a slight bitterness to its taste that gives it more body than a lot of lagers but not so much as to become stifling. You can drink this lager at a reasonable pace and not screw your face up as you get further down the glass.
Perfect Draft has put out glassware with these kegs on occasion and that glassware drops a subtle hint as to how Hasseröder should be enjoyed. I’d strongly recommended consuming by the schooner rather than the pint. (Something I’d recommend for a lot of Perfect Draft beers in fact.)
